Happy Thanksgiving Weekend

I started this post yesterday but Thankfully, my children saw the need to take my USB cable. Thankfully because I spent the day with them, slaving in the kitchen to produce this!!!
(poor guy didn't have a chance after I invited him to dinner)
Thankfully everyone helped.  Hubbie made bread crumbs from bread while I was at mass. AJ finished the job because instead of 8 pieces Hubbie heard 5.
MJ went to the store with AJ and Daddy to get peanut butter because what is a house without peanut butter. (also I needed to concentrate on the turkey)


I'm thankful for Superstore for letting me buy a turkey at "regular" price while it was on sale and having me go back to the store to get my money back. I loved the way they implied it was "my" mistake that they over charged me for my 4.94kg Turkey.(difference of 6.45canadian dollars) Thank you for doing your own leg work after me standing at your customer Service Counter for 15minutes (you said it was 10? really who is the customer, I said it was 20minutes, let's meet in the middle?). Thank you for finally giving me the difference in price, even after your mistake which according to store policy is to refund me the full price of the defrosting bird.(thank you for letting me use run on sentences) I could have brought him back to the store in his 1/2 frozen state. He was tasty after I plucked out the leftover feathers that Presidents Choice neglected to remove before bagging it in a GRADE A package, with the fine print that reads "graded before adding gibblets". (CYA statements?)


Thank to TJ for staying home from the trip to the Peanut Butter store (not Superstore btw) and helping me basted the turkey by reminding me when the time came. I think he just wanted to open the store repeatedly to smell Turkey doing his thing.


Thank you for Canada for having a holiday this weekend, and not leaving us out of that Columbus Day party down south. It's a great excuse for a turkey and visiting family and friends.



Thank you earth for growing Carrots and for the person that invented vegetable peelers. I can't imagine how many fingers I'd have lost or how much carrot and potatoes would be left if I had to resort to the knife plan.

Thank you Tenderflake, Sheriff and Goodine's Poultry Farm for helping me achieve Lemon Meringue success. I'd hate to have to go to SS to buy a Pie after that turkey price fiasco.

Grade4 Social Studies Project, Mom Assistance Required.

OK I was sitting here wondering oh wondering what you'd like to read, or what I'd like to post so here it is... ShortBreads.
AJ's School project this month was assigned with a preview in December. They asked them to include a recipe that reflected our ancestral back ground. A food that is used during holidays or special events. Christmas is a special even. They didn't have to send the food, but my boy AJ? he loves to bake with me, and show off his baking skills. He listens the most and has the most interest in doing it the way I would.  The others? they like to "improvise" or suggest other ways of doing it.

(sorry it's kind of blurry, imagine you ate it already)

This recipe comes from my Mom's Christmas cooking book (read:scribbler full of hand written recipes that she's narrated over the phone to me various times). I have this one written on the back of an envelope, that a friend Lauren sent me in 2001 for Christmas. We met as a Baby group. Our Babies? AJ and her J are now 8! so we continue to email, and get Christmas cards YAY!! and compete in the ever popular game of Lexulous on FB (I know it's a huge tangent but I do that)
The envelope is very loved, and full of splotches of fat from the butter, or even dried on Shortbread splatter, but it's perfect. I keep it inside my Christmas cook book that I also love and use the most for the holidays.
So with out further a due <---- really does it spell like that?)
"The envelope please...:
1lb of Butter (2 cups, or 454g) ah I know you are sooooooo impressed right?)
1tsp of vanilla*

1 Cup of icing sugar (confectioners sugar/powdered sugar, it all depends where you live what you call it)
2 1/2 cups of flour
1 Cup of cornstarch, (I know? who knew that those boxes with the rooster had more then 1cup in them, but they do.)
2inches of salt.

ok get out your huge mixer, yep the more power the better (insert toolman argh argh argh here, it's power tools for in home bakers)
Cream together the Butter, as fluffy as you can make it, keep it going... yep fluffy, creamy, whip it... whip it good..oops tangent
Then the vanilla, the 1 cup of icing sugar, keep whipping.
Now put that baby on FULL speed whip, put in the mixture of salt, cornstarch and flour about 1/2 cup at a time. Wipe down your shirt it's probablly full of flour if you put the mix in while the beaters are still spinning. when you get to about the last cup of flour mix? make sure the sides of the bowl are scraped down and everything is together, and add in the rest, wait wait wait, yep it looks like either good or crumbly, if it's gooey? you are about done, and then 1TBSP at a time-ish roll all the dough into balls. Our last batch made 57cookies. I think someone may have rolled them a bit bigger  in hopes he could get the bigger cookies for himself? maybe. Bake these at 350 for 20-25minutes. They will look done at about 18minutes and you can take them out but they will crumble. Keep watching. I suspect it's a "feel" thing. I wonder though how my ancestors did it without a 350F setting? I have seen other shortbread recipes made completely differently so I can't say these would be an original recipe, more of a work in progress? in 100+years, Im sure someone will come up with something different.
The cookies are then either thumb printed or pressed. We press them with a angel press I got from my mother one Christmas in my stocking. I love that press. We took a picture of the press, sent in the cookies in and picture of AJ mixing and pressing his cookies. He received an A+ for his work.

*I use that artificial vanilla and it's fine, and keeps longer, and no one is off swigging it, another tangent.... I had a babysitter that told me she worked in a store  as a teen and had to monitor which customers were buying how much vanilla extract, I totally sucked up that story at 12yrsold, my Mom had 5 kids, I went to school she watched the babies, yes i was responsible...just couldn't be at school and home babysitting too.

My BBQ is still outside.
The boys will mostly likely be home tomorrow for a snow day.
The snow hasn't really started. Flake 1 and 2 have been sighted but I nothing since,and the cancellations have started on the radio.
Hubbie has been asked to bring home Milk, Eggs, Butter, and Bread, just incase of starvation, this never happens, it's just that well those things are empty at the moment.
The boys have a Christmas concert tomorrow, maybe.
Tuques and mittens, skipants and jackets are all lined up at the door for the mad morning dash to the bus, iffff there is a bus.
All cars have been snowtire ready for 2wks now. This is the most ahead we've ever been for winter.
The snow blower is tuned up, and the shovels are by the doors.
Deck chairs are on the deck vs on the lawn, see there's already snow out there from 3days ago, it's just not going to melt before tonight, but maybe if we get the rain too, it will all be gone tomorrow.

And GO Hockey, oh wait it's not Saturday so no "Hockey Night in Canada" tonight.

Update from my small help staff of 3 in the wii department, flakes 50-80thousand have arrived.

What I look forward to most on Thanksgiving is __the Turkey but this year, back in October I compromised and made a Ham for my son, well no it's not the same, so last week when Turkey went on sale, I went nd bought me my Turkey! YUMMY! we had turkey dinner, then hot turkey sandwiches, then cold turkey salad Sandwiches, and finally I managed to get me some Turkey and Ranch Wrap. YUMMY Turkey!_______. (if you don't celebrate thanksgiving, insert your favorite holiday)
3. My Christmas/holiday shopping is ____not even started, I'm waiting for better prices______.
4. Thoughts of ____decorating this house now_________ fill my head.
5. I wish I could wear ______my hair short sometimes but then I'd kick myself for getting it cut________.
6. Bagpipes ___are what played when I walked down the aisle more then 14yrs ago_____.
7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to _Spending time with my parents, they are came to visit yesterday____, tomorrow my plans include _Bowling, shopping for skipants and warm socks____ and Sunday, I want to __watch AJ curl, I think if we get our "stuff" together get to early mass, and sundayschool all accomplished on time, we can all go. Happy Thanksgiving!

Yes today is Thanksgiving weekend up here in Canada so today I'm baking a spice cake with AJ and getting ready to have Ham for supper. The boys Grandparents will be here next weekend so I'm saving my Turkey and fixing for their visit. The boys have been off school since Thursday and will be home Monday as well. We usually have our meal on Sunday dinners here so if we have guests they can us Monday for their clean up, travel or lazing around.

Yesterday we went out to meet up with some friends. They are visiting family in the province and seeing the East Coast for the first time. Last night we met in person for the first time. Allison and I have been emailing and chatting and talking on the phone for the last 8+yrs. We met online while expecting our 8yrolds. Yesterday those 8yrolds got to meet for the first time.

The funny part of the whole thing is the boys asked me how I knew Allison, and I said I met her on-line, and that's when the big eyes started staring me down with words like "Strangers, and internet, and careful", so I know they've been listening to me.


Happy Thanksgiving I'm so Thankful for Friends and even Computers! :) I'm also Thankful to Allison's family for hosting us and feeding us and our kids, it's so nice to meet new friends.

Excitment of Tuesday Afternoon

So I was waiting for Hubbie to come home at supper and go out with MJ to the Doctors office yesterday. We got a quick appointment with the Nurse Practitioner lastnight to check out a Gash in his chin he got while "bouncing". I say 'stop bouncing"' but he doesn't listen and yesterday he bounced right into the kitchen counter SMACK! I put a bandaid on it but wanted to verify it didn't need stitches. It went very well, off to the office we went. We could have gone to the ER but I thought that might be a bit more excitment then necessary for the 1/2inch gapping gash. Got it fixed.

RTT August and summer and only 28days left

RTT, yep that's today Random Tuesday Thoughts, I'm sure you've seen if all over the blogosphere cause well it's popular, have you seen that list!! Keely's site?
So go on over there pick up a badge, start randomizing and then when your don't, slap your link onto her comments/ linky thingy and finally read some other random thoughts. Tuesdays aren't Tuesday's without some random. Cool she's got naked in there this week... wait it's Casey that's naked and running to the potty? great now I know where my child get his "can't go to a different potty" from; he's been reading my blogs?



you know it's great to see when someone goes on vacation and asks someone else to fill in that they DO it! Remember that Hubbie Random Tuesday that didn't? I'm still wondering what exactly he'd say.


Well the beach was great and warm but when the beach is warm everyone and the parasites want to swim too, ick! so they are advising you to towel off quick as you get out. PASS! This maybe why Aj has a bit of a spot on him, he had a cut, put a sticky bandagey thing on it and I guess the water got stuck in there because the spot where the sticky was is now red, I'm treating with neosporin for now. The cut part healed, the sticky trapped water part didn't. ugh!

Probably wouldn't be a good idea to swim there naked, see I fit in now;got that done.

Maybe the ocean is called for, might be time to hit the ocean beach. Some nice salt water to stay a float on.

The boys got a tent for grading from my parents, we picked it up on the island, and now we're missing a pole I called and they can either send the pole with a guy that commutes a lot from there or not. I said don't worry about it, I'm not outdoorsy enough to go all silly about it, they wouldn't last out there by the crop circle for more then an hour tops! ha!

Sleepless nights, then again maybe it would get AJ to sleep earlier if I told him he couldn't have the tent night if he didn't go to bed in it? He's been getting up and dragging out bed time. He's that child that tries every single trick in the book to get things his way. It doesn't matter that I don't change my mind or that he doesn't get his way, he's still going to keep trying. Isn't that Kyoot? no!

We haven't seen any critters lately, nope no sign of them? Maybe they are busy bunking down for the winter? it is August? I'm noticing it's a tad cooler at night, the leaves on my first flowering tree of the year are 1/2 gone,Wahhhhh!

28days! (not that I'm counting) until the boys are back in school and I enter my last year of having a preschool kid home. ACK! I may have to solve this.

Abandon Chair was having a bit of a time out this week.


So when discussing cars with some of my commenters, Ashlee, clued me into this gem, her car? has a "anti-hit me shield". She had suggested this after the previous suggestion to put all the kids in the 3rd row of seats. I like this idea so much that now 3rd row of seats is a keeper feature. Maybe an invisibility cloak would be handy too?

Right now we have TJ back there in the 3rd row in my van, with his lovely puke bucket, paper towels, fridge and pillow for when the gravol kicks in. I wonder if the others would like to join him, and I'll stow all the stuff in the middle. Well we've also added a Journey to the list of "maybes?". We had a Magnum home but there is no 3rd row and the battery is in the back with the spare tire. I liked the spare tire inside the car, much better, no need to Beat the poop out of the car to get it to drop down when changing your tire at the side of an abandon road. For some reason I gravitate to dodge, I don't know why, I didn't grow up in a dodge home, I grew up in a GM home.

Ford didn't show up but I hear from the Headless mom's that they've done some work on their cars and their assembly. There is a huge ford Dealership here so I may take the boys for a drive. Field Trip?

When I was on the island I found it very useful for 2 adults and 4 kids to travel. TJ got to keep the youngest child company and was the most helpful for that. Maybe I should just add more kids so I have to have a bigger car?

It got quiet here? wow they all have their noses stuck in a book? Maybe they are all ready for school to start? hehe hhaha YAY~!


Today i'm removing tape from the painting that was done on the weekend. I love how well "let's paint" worked. I did 3/20 pieces of chair rail and 1 foot long of baseboard.

Random Tuesday Thoughts, Wet Thoughts

A 10yrold can bake a cake, yep!

7.5yrolds like to style their hair with Aloe Gel, nope it doesn't work but they are happy

4yrolds like to imitate 7.5yrolds but use Ketchup for colour.

Husbands that go to the USA for mail have a KFC addiction when he walks in the door and the guy behind the counter says "we're out of buffalo sauce", I could almost here the sigh up here in Canada.

Bills suck, I think Bill should get his own mail box with a shredder attached.

The laundry work out is now over, it's not worth it, run up the stairs, hang the clothes when the sun shines, watch the house go gray, run to the line take the clothes in fast, in the house, see the sun, back to the line, hang them up gain, fade to gray, run and catch them before the skies open up.... Back in the house, pull laundry back outside when the sun comes back only to discover that it's starting to rain again after you just get them up there? yeah my line looks like this


No it seriously is Summer up here, and no you don't need your snow tires on your car but maybe if you're coming this way bring lots of RAIN Gear. It's been raining every day for 1.5wks now I think. I'd have to check the weather channel but TV is useless here no digital, no cable no nothing!

There is a fine line between making mud pies and mud wrestling, I think the distinction is the "MOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!" heard from the muddy crop circle.

Chasing your kids with the words "If I catch you(off he goes) I'm going to...." is like the great work out ever! I couldn't catch him at all! I think we circled the house 5 times before he gave up and chased me.



My kids seem to be able to hit any ball hit to them on a wii, but not in rl? We're going to work on that the Volleyball/Badminton net is pretty lonely out there with Abandon chair. REALLY I promise it doesn't usually rain this much here.

Today July 1st!!! is Canada Day, Yep we get to celebrate 3 days previous to our US neighbours and we are pretty fun about it. Today we hope to take the kids down town to the "Block Party" for some Food, and Fun. Mostly it's a lot of food wagons or tents set up and maybe a pony ride.

The weather for today? oh it's Raining again the outside world looks gray and blah so it will take a lot of energy to liven this place up. The Hubbie is home from work this is totally messing with the daily system. It's hard not to say "Go to work" out loud!

Random Tusday strikes again

I've been trying to prepare for Easter Weekend. Easter with the family is my favorite kind of Easter, because I don't have to cook. I can contribute to the meal but I'm not in charge of the Star of the show meat! I'm not sure who is doing the feeding but I'll have to see. I did thought bake 2 orange loaves for the trip they are currently living in my freezer and may or may not defrost before we hit the island but it was hard not to eat them before getting there. Truth be told I baked a double batch of them, and I I mean the kids, at it the majority of it, OK so maybe I had a few more slices then they did. EASY recipe,so I re-baked another one last night. 1 is missing the "end" pieces because Hubbie found it cooling on the counter!

The boys are excited for easter, MJ came to me yesterday while I was stalking the markets for my Packrat application obsession, and says "MOM why are there Eggs in your closet?" My only response was they are for Grandma because the Easter Bunny doesn't bring her chocolate anymore. ACK! my sister suggested that The E.Bunny left them here for us to bring to his cousin Matty. It works for very loved hand-me-down clothes it might work for Plastic Eggs. The Truth of the story is that the Eggs are for Grandma's house. We aren't going to imply at all that the eggs are from MR E.Bunny, but they are from Hubbie and Me for a BIG hunt in my mother's yard. This is a first for me, usual most of my egg hunts are indoor events but there is no snow on that section of the island says my informants, soooo I'd like to do it outside. This will also protect Grandma's precious "not for babies/kids" furniture and knick knacks? Maybe? If it's Raining I'll just hand the eggs over to the kids, and my siblings will be so happy to see their kids covered in chocolate and sticky candy goo! :) When your the oldest you can do stuff like this. (ok I Want to believe I can do stuff like this and that I'm the boss)

I've warned Hubbie he'll be run ragged and need a break after the weekend to sleep! He's warn out enough from doing kid patrol during the nights. MJ is getting up way less then he used to, maybe because I'm not going in there? and it's harder to explain to Hubbie who's almost brain dead from lack of sleep, what he wants or what I usually do! I just go to the kitchen get cup of water, put it on the table, or hand it over, say here's water, go pee, and get back in bed. Hubbie do the "what do you want" stuff which just leads to MORE discussion and way longer up time. hehe (downtime in this case is preferable)

I'm not looking for the "trip to grandmas" the Trip part, it's a bit more then over the hill and through the woods, the extended version. My Friend Mrsbigblupete (one of my faithful followers and friend with Island living skills) says it's like being TRAPPED in a Tin Can hurling down the highway at 120kms hour itching to get to the END". We've had some successful trips, but it's those Stuck in the parking lot of a church at 12am trying to get the child to stop puking only 1hour from your final exit that get etched in your brain. Those trips though were 14hours from the island. Now we live 7hours from the destination. It makes a difference but the 2 children that know the 14hour trip are easy, they've been there and done that, their brains know how much longer it could be. MJ? he's only ever done the 7hour version. This 7hour version is if they get out, pee and get back to the car instantly. There are no stops along the way to just see the sights, no it's GET IN GET THERE AND GET OUT and kiss the ground. The stops are pee, gas, snacks if the driver is hungry for something other then what the copilot has packed. We will try not to resort to eating the frozen orange loaves.
